Microbiological laboratory diagnostics must adapt to dynamic changes in the field of infectious diseases. Due to the advances in technology, there is increasing opportunity for better detection and more rapid reporting of relevant pathogens. However, most of the causative agents of bacterial infections today are part of human microbiota and the interpretation of the laboratory findings requires taking into consideration patient characteristics and the pathogenic potential of the microorganism which leaves a lot of space for subjective interpretation. In some countries clinical microbiologists are more restrictive in what they report as clinically relevant than in the others. This course will offer insights into a standardized approach to the diagnosis and treatment of most common bacterial infections through lectures and interactive tutorials. The aim of this course is to serve as a matrix course for training potential trainers in different countries and regions. Standardized approach to diagnosing infections will improve individual patient management, increase the reliability of surveillance data and help to streamline rational antibiotic use. This course aims to motivate participants to organize similar courses in their own settings, preferably as a part of their local or national antibiotic stewardship programs.
