Network of Emerging Infections Experts

Emerging infections provide a unique set of challenges where this subcommittee must maintain vigilance and readiness to respond rapidly to unforeseen threats. Swift and effective analysis, communication and coordination is needed to address these challenges and as such, the subcommittee aims to serve as a coordinating body for a larger network of expertise that can be drawn upon when needed.

The ESCMID Network of Emerging Infections Experts is the response to this need, creating collaborations with a wide range of expertise to effectively respond to diverse and unpredictable infectious threats. This network is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Rapid response: emerging infections demand swift action; a pre-established network allows for immediate consultation and mobilisation of relevant expertise.
  2. Diverse expertise: the unpredictable nature of emerging infections necessitates collaborations across varied disciplines and topics, from virology and epidemiology to clinical management and specific pathogens.
  3. Flexibility: as threats evolve, the ability to quickly engage different combinations of experts based on the specific challenge at hand is necessary.
  4. Rapid working group formation: the network shall serve as a ready pool of experts for the rapid creation of focused working groups in response to specific emerging threats. This allows for swift assembly of teams with the most relevant expertise for any given situation.

Network Participation Framework

Members of the network will:

  • Receive timely information on emerging infectious disease threats and subcommittee activities
  • Be called upon based on their specific expertise when relevant situations arise
  • Have opportunities to contribute to working groups addressing specific threats
  • Be invited to participate in the development of guidance documents and educational materials when appropriate

The network operates on a flexible engagement model, recognising that experts' availability and relevance to specific threats will vary. The network will also contribute to capacity-building, including both established experts and more early-career colleagues who can learn from each other. Individual contributions will be recognised in each material published.
